The National Centre for Health Statistics has surveyed some of the leading causes of death in the United States that date back to the early twentieth century. The NCHS uses the actual number of death as its basis in ranking the causes of mortality in the US.
From the survey, it was found out that vehicular accidents ranked fifth from the ten major death causes. In 2004 alone, a total record of 112,012 deaths was noted in the US, with an age-adjusted death rate of 37.7 deaths in every 100,000 population. In total, car accidents account for almost five percent of all the deaths in the US each year.

State Rankings
Car accidents rank fifth as the leading cause of death in the US, but it is on the third spot in four US states; namely, New Mexico, Mississippi, Arizona, and Alaska.
The US states with the highest rates of accident mortality are New Mexico, West Virginia, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Alaska, while the states with the lowest mortality rates are New Jersey, Maryland, Rhode Island, New York, and Massachusetts.
