Alabama Auto Insurance Requirements
As a “Tort” state, all drivers residing in Alabama are financially responsible for all damages and personal injuries they cause in an auto accident. To prove your financial responsibility, you can do one of many things:
- Purchase an automobile liability policy with minimum coverage amounts of 20/40/10 (see the chart below).
- Purchase an automobile liability bond for at least $50,000
- Make a cash deposit with the State Treasurer for no less than $50,000.
Regardless of your choice, you will need to carry proof with you in your vehicle at all times. If you choose to purchase auto insurance, your insurance company will send you an identification card or other document that lists the policy number, automobiles and drivers insured under your policy, and the policy's expiration date. Alabama officials survey residents on a regular basis for such proof. If you do not have proof, you will be fined, and the Department of Revenue may suspend your vehicle's tags.
Alabama drivers can choose to increase their auto protection by adding optional comprehensive, collision, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and/or medical payments coverages.

You may want to consider purchasing limits of coverage higher than those required by law to protect your assets or property, as you may be personally responsible for any damages above the policy limits.
