Connecticut Auto Insurance Requirements

When you’re in the market for a new auto insurance policy in the “Constitution State” there are a few regulations that you’ll need to keep in mind. First and foremost, Connecticut is a “Tort” state, which means that you are financially responsible for any damage or injury that you cause during an accident. Liability insurance coverage is mandatory to meet this requirement. State-wide liability minimums exist, but they are fairly low (see the chart below). As such, you should purchase the highest coverage limits you can afford.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage is also required, with a minimum of 20/40 (see chart below). Again, higher amounts are recommended if your needs dictate them.

Underinsured Motorist Conversion Coverage is an option to keep your coverage amount from being reduced by the underinsured’s liability coverage, which is what usually happens. If you incur damages in an accident that are greater than the underinsured's policy limits, Conversion Coverage allows you to collect payment up to the sum of both parties' policy limits.

Optional auto insurance coverages in Connecticut include full glass breakage (with no deductible), medical payments, collision and comprehensive.

Key Facts...
Almost two in three auto insurance shoppers used an online quote request in their most recent search. This contrasts with only 4% of auto insurance shoppers who purchased a policy at least five years ago. In 2009, one in every three consumers purchased a policy entirely online.
