Florida Auto Insurance Requirements

The “Sunshine State” has auto insurance laws characterized by the “Partial No-Fault” system. This simply means that all injured parties are responsible for their own medical bills and any other costs related to injuries as a result of the accident.

It is mandatory for anyone who operates a vehicle in the state of Florida to hold the following coverage:

• Property damage liability - minimum of $10,000 per person and $20,000 per accident (see chart below)

Despite these relatively low minimums, it is highly recommended to increase your amount of coverage depending upon your situation. You can increase your PIP to a higher value and keep the cost down by adding a higher deductible or perhaps excluding policy add-ons. Purchasing additional coverages, such as collision, comprehensive, or uninsured and underinsured motorist, is recommended to enhance your current protection.

The state of Florida may make mandatory for drivers with accidents or other moving violations to carry Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) in their auto policies, with a 10/20 minimum. While not required for the general driving population, it is recommended for all motorists in Florida to hold a BIL option in their policy to protect their assets.

Auto Insurance for Leased Vehicles in Florida (FL)

Most leasing companies in Florida typically require drivers to maintain insurance coverage which exceeds the minimums set by Florida state law. This is to protect you financially, as well as your leasing company, should they be held partly responsible. Most leasing companies will recommend the following amounts of insurance coverage:

• Bodily injury liability coverage: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident
• Property damage liability coverage: $50,000
• Comprehensive and collision coverage: $500 maximum deductible
