Kentucky Auto Insurance (KY)

All motor vehicles in Kentucky must have liability insurance and basic no-fault personal injury insurance.

Proof of insurance must always be kept inside a vehicle, and must be shown to a peace office upon request. Motor vehicle liability insurance policies must offer at least $25,000/$50,000 limits for bodily injuries and $10,000 for property damage (outlined in chart below).

No-fault coverage pays up to $10,000 for expenses such as lost wages, medical expenses, and replacement services in the case of injury due to an accident regardless of fault. Under no-fault personal injury insurance, the right to sue is limited in case of minor injury. However, these limitations can be rejected by special request in writing to the Kentucky Department of Insurance.

Another option to no-fault liability is a "split limit" policy which is a single limit agreement. This offers a limited liability of at least $60,000, and provides a minimum of $10,000 in no-fault personal-injury coverage.

Coverage Type Required? Minimum Coverage Amount Required
Bodily Injury Liability Yes

$25,000 per person

$50,000 per accident

Property Damage Liability Yes

$10,000

Uninsured Motorist Coverage No

$25,000 per person

$50,000 per accident

Personal Injury No

Kentucky motor vehicle operators may add to their protection by purchasing one or more of the following add-ons: collision, comprehensive, medical payments, or uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

You may want to consider purchasing limits of coverage higher than those required by law to protect your assets or property, as you may be personally responsible for any damages above the policy limits.

Almost two in three auto insurance shoppers used an online quote request in their most recent search. This contrasts with only 4% of auto insurance shoppers who purchased a policy at least five years ago. In 2009, one in every three consumers purchased a policy entirely online.
