Maine Auto Insurance Requirements
As one of the many “tort” states in the country, Maine residents are financially responsible for all bodily injuries and/or property damages that are a result of an accident for which they are at fault.
Therefore, Maine insurance laws are designed to protect you.
First, auto liability insurance is required for all drivers with minimum coverage levels of 50/100/25 (see the chart below). This will help to cover your expenses of damages to the other car, drivers and passengers.

Next, Maine insurance laws mandate a minimum of $1000 of medical expense coverage. This covers you and your family members in the event of any auto accident, including being hit by a car while walking.
And finally Maine strongly encourages you purchase uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage with minimum coverage of 50/100 (see the chart below). This will help to cover your expenses in the unfortunate event that you’re in an accident with an uninsured motorist, or one with inadequate insurance coverage. Please note that if you chose to increase your liability insurance levels, the law requires that you increase your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage to same levels.
Maine residents may optimize their auto insurance by adding optional comprehensive and/or collision coverage.
