Find Out How Much Money You Can Save on Insurance!

Maryland Auto Insurance Requirements

The state of Maryland offers fairly standard and straightforward auto insurance liability regulations. Liability coverage protects drivers when an accident in which they are at fault causes financial issues for the other motor vehicle operators and passengers. This includes coverage for property damage and bodily injury they may cause. The minimum liability levels set by Maryland law are 20/40/15 (see the chart below).

Maryland also requires that drivers obtain uninsured motorist coverage as part of their car insurance policies. This coverage will help with any expenses incurred if you are involved in an accident with a vehicle operated by someone without insurance. Minimum requirements are also 20/40/15 (see the chart below).

Last, but not least, Maryland requires a minimum of $2500 PIP if you opt-in (personal injury protection). This coverage helps with any medical expenses or lost wages, no matter who is at fault. Some drivers with excellent health insurance can waive this portion and save on premiums. One caveat would be that most health insurance companies will not cover lost wages or any passenger injury costs.

Collision and comprehensive add-ons are available options for auto insurance policies in Maryland.

Almost two in three auto insurance shoppers used an online quote request in their most recent search. This contrasts with only 4% of auto insurance shoppers who purchased a policy at least five years ago. In 2009, one in every three consumers purchased a policy entirely online.
