Massachusetts Auto Insurance Requirements
All Massachusetts drivers are required by law to carry Personal Injury Protection (or PIP) because the Bay State is considered to be a “No-Fault” state. The PIP will cover some of the policy holder’s expenses in the event of an accident, no matter who was at fault. The No Fault law makes it improbable to sue the other driver for damages, unless the cost of your injuries is more than your PIP. $8,000 is the minimum level of PIP allowed on an auto insurance policy.
Other types of coverage are also mandatory in order to operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts. Auto liability is required with minimum levels of 20/40/5 (see the chart below).

Last, but not least, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is required as well. This addition will help to cover your expenses in the event that you are involved in an auto accident with either an uninsured driver, or one lacking the proper insurance coverage for your injuries.
Massachusetts drivers may increase their protection by adding an option collision, comprehensive, and/or medical payment coverage to their policy.
