Auto Insurance for New Drivers
Unfortunately, it's hard for young drivers (age 25 and below) or first-time drivers to catch a break, given their lack of experience on the road and the poor track record of the first-time drivers that came before them. This isn't to say, however, that new drivers aren't able to take measures to lower their rates.
First, the bad: younger and less experienced drivers cause more accidents than their older and more seasoned counterparts. Insurance rates vary, sometimes by thousands of dollars; and the two biggest factors in determining your rate are 1) your age, and 2) what you drive.
The good news is that as you get older, your insurance invariably goes down. Companies are known to lower premiums once you pass a certain age (typically 21, 25, and 30 year olds see their rates lowered), as well as for certain lifestyle events, such as getting married or having a child, that they infer as signs of greater maturity.
What you look for in an insurance package has a lot to do with the type of car you drive. Owners of new cars will want to consider Collision and Comprehensive coverage to protect their investment, while used car drivers may be better served by liability coverage alone.

Ways New Drivers Can Save on Car Insurance
All new drivers share a common goal, though, of wanting to get the best deal on quality insurance coverage. From this standpoint, it's a good idea to get quotes from a couple of different companies. Ask about what discounts you qualify for: There are discounts for things like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and anti-theft devices, as well as what's called a "Safe Driver" discount—if you've gone 3 years without an accident or any points against your record, you should qualify. Some insurance companies have safe vehicle discounts as well. There is statistical data suggesting that some cars are less of a risk than others, and if your vehicle falls into the safe category, you can use that to your advantage.
