New York Auto Insurance Requirements

New York state law requires that you have two types of auto insurance coverage in order to operate a motor vehicle:

  • Auto liability coverage
  • Personal injury protection (PIP)

Auto liability coverage helps to cover any property damage or personal injuries that you caused in an automobile accident. The minimum amount required is 25/50 (see the chart below). This amount increases to 50/100 in the evens that a death occurs.

PIP coverage, also known as “No-Fault Insurance”, covers any personal injuries incureed in an accident, no matter who was at fault. It includes medical expenses, loss of service or wages, as well as a death benefit. Keep in mind, though, that this coverage prevents you from suing the other party for damages, unless the accident results in serious injury or death.

Although uninsured motorist bodily injury is not required in New York, it is strongly encouraged. This type of coverage helps to cover costs of your own personal injuries if you are hit by someone without liability insurance.

New York drivers may purchase additional protection through policy add-ons, such as collision, comprehensive, medical expenses, and/or underinsured motorists coverage.

Almost two in three auto insurance shoppers used an online quote request in their most recent search. This contrasts with only 4% of auto insurance shoppers who purchased a policy at least five years ago. In 2009, one in every three consumers purchased a policy entirely online.
