North Dakota Auto Insurance Requirements

North Dakota is one of this country’s “No Fault” state which limits the circumstances for which you can sue an at-fault driver for damages. This is because you are required by law to carry your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP), also known as “Basic No-Fault” . This protection will cover your medical expenses, regardless of who is at fault in an accident. The minimum level of coverage required is $30,000 per person.

As with most states, you are also legally obligated to carry auto liability insurance to help cover the cost of damages and injuries to the other party involved if you are at fault. Minimum levels of auto liability required are 25/50/25 (see the chart below).

Uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage is not mandatory, but is strongly encouraged with minimums of 25/50. This coverage aids in covering your expenses should you be struck by a driver without enough liability to cover your damages and injuries, or that doesn’t have any insurance at all.

Finally, North Dakota drivers can add additional comprehensive and collision coverage to their policy, even purchase additional PIP, and increase the levels of liability and/or uninsured/underinsured motorist to have optimum protection.

Key Facts...
Almost two in three auto insurance shoppers used an online quote request in their most recent search. This contrasts with only 4% of auto insurance shoppers who purchased a policy at least five years ago. In 2009, one in every three consumers purchased a policy entirely online.
