Find Out How Much Money You Can Save on Insurance!

Auto Insurance for Older Drivers

While drivers around the age of 30 will see their premiums drop as a result of their increased driving experience, many will see their rates rise by the time they hit age 65, due to the increased risk associated with older drivers. With the number of seniors on the road increasing in the United States as the population ages, insurance companies are sharpening their focus on the risk of crashes among the elderly.

It's true that senior drivers (55 years or older) are much less likely to speed or engage in other aggressive driving habits. This isn't to say, however, that older drivers are immune from the hazards that face all of us. They are more prone to impaired hearing, vision, and mobility, and, more often than not, have slower reflexes than they did in their 30s and 40s. Eyesight deteriorates with age, resulting in less peripheral vision and increased sensitivity to glare. Older drivers often experience problems driving at night, because of the decreased amount of light. And at the age of 70 and above, for example, the rate of fatal car crashes per licensed driver rises staggeringly.

Ways to Save on Car Insurance as an Older Driver

Driving plays a large role in ensuring their sustained independence, and insurance carriers often offer discounts to drivers over 55. There are cost-efficient insurance options out there for the conscientious older driver. Insurance carriers offer discounted premiums, based on the number of miles they drive (seniors tend to drive less frequently than other age groups), and their tendency to drive slower and less aggressively.

One way elderly drivers can keep their insurance costs from rising significantly is to enroll in a state-certified driver improvement course, specifically one geared toward drivers 55 or older. Many states require discounts for drivers who complete such a course.

Key Facts...
Almost two in three auto insurance shoppers used an online quote request in their most recent search. This contrasts with only 4% of auto insurance shoppers who purchased a policy at least five years ago. In 2009, one in every three consumers purchased a policy entirely online.
