Prudential began in 1875 as the Prudential Friendly Society by insurance agent John Fairfield Dryden, and was the first insurance company to make life insurance available to the working class. Industrial insurance sold funeral and burial expense insurance to low income families, with some premiums as low as three cents per week.
Throughout the next hundred years, Prudential remained "solid as a rock," even through the Great Depression when other companies didn't make it through.
Over the past 100 years, Prudential has grown to include all aspects of a solid financial background, including real estate, annuities, investments, credit cards and business services to assist companies to meet their employee benefit needs. As of September 2005, Prudential’s assets were approximately $552 billion.
