Renewing your Driver's License

The process of renewing your license varies according to the state you live in, but there are some specific steps that are common to every state. In most states, license renewal costs less than $20, unless you are renewing a commercial license. Renewing license plates typically costs between $30 and $100.

Online License Renewal

In many states you can now renew your license online. However, even if this service is available in your state, there are some situations in which you may not be eligible for online renewal, such as:

  • You do not meet the minimum vision requirements (20/40 central vision and at least 120 degrees of peripheral vision)
  • You have a medical condition such as epilepsy or hypoglycemia that may affect your ability to drive safely.
  • You are taking medication that may affect your ability to drive safely.
  • Have an outdated license photo (typically one more than nine or ten years old).
  • Your license has been expired for more than one year.
  • You are renewing a commercial license.

Renewing your License at the DMV

If any of the above situations applies, or if your state does not offer online renewal, you’ll need to visit the DMV to get this done. As long as you’re renewing your license within one year of expiry, you won’t need to take any further tests (such as a road test or vision test). If none of the above situations apply to you, the process is fairly simple—you’ll just need to provide photo identification and pay the renewal fee to get your new license.

However, if your license has been invalid for a certain period of time (typically between one and three years), or any other special situations apply, you may need to resit knowledge or road tests, retake the vision test, or undergo medical examination depending on your specific situation.
