Virginia Auto Insurance Requirements
Virginia is a "Tort" state, which means drivers are financially responsible for all property damage and bodily injury they cause in an accident. Most Virginians choose to purchase an auto insurance policy as proof of their financial responsibility.
If you choose not to purchase auto insurance, you can pay $500 to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to drive your car uninsured.

A standard auto insurance policy consists of several parts:
- Liability insurance will help to cover the costs on both property damage and bodily injury that are a result of an accident for which you are at fault. The auto liability minimums are 25/50/20 (see the chart below).
Drivers may also purchase uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which helps pay for damages (property damage and bodily injury) in the event that you are in an accident with a driver who does not have enough insurance or no insurance at all.
Many Virginia drivers choose to protect themselves even more by carrying optional collision, comprehensive, medical expense, loss of income, and/or funeral expense coverage.
